No. 1 Union tops Lyon, Chan and Graves reach 1,000 points

BATESVILLE, Ark. - 2/11/2010 - The No. 1 ranked Union (Tenn.) University Lady Bulldogs won 73-58 at Lyon (Ark.) College on Thursday night. In the win, Union’s Sara Chan and Jessica Graves each passed the 1,000 career points mark.

Chan and Graves became the second and third Lady Bulldog players to reach the career milestone in the past three games, and fourth on the season. Union’s Kayla Hudson reached her 1,000 career points in the win at Bethel last Thursday. Kaitlin Dudley passed 2,000 career points back in January. Going into the game, Chan needed just four points to reach 1,000, while Graves needed 11 of her 12 points in the game to pass the mark.

Union improved to 24-1 overall with the win and 11-0 in the TranSouth. Lyon dropped to 15-9 on the season and 5-6 in league play. Union’s win also extended their overall winning streak to 17 and their TranSouth regular season game winning streak to 46.

Union and Lyon opened the game by swapping a pair of baskets. With the scored tied at 4-4, Graves of Union drained a three pointer that sparked a 31-8 run for the Lady Bulldogs. Union led 35-12 after Kayla Bryant capped the run with a three pointer of her own. Union maintained that 23-point lead with a 42-19 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Union continued their dominate play over the first 10 minutes of the half. Union pushed their lead out to as many as 32 points on two occasions with the latest coming 65-33 with 10 minutes left in the half. When it seemed Union would continue to extend the lead, the Lyon Pipers made a run to keep the game respectable. Lyon outscored Union 25-8 over the final 10 minutes of play to set the final scored at 73-58.

Union was led by Chan with a game high 20 points. Graves and Stacey Conway each added 12 points, while Dudley scored 10 points. Graves, Dudley and Bryant each recorded two 3-pointers in the contest. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 30 percent (7-23) from behind the arc and 80 percent (8-10) from the free-throw line.

Union out rebounded Lyon 39-36, and committed six less turnover (14-8).

Lyon was led by Syeeda Echols with 12 points. Johna Wade added 11 points and Stephanie Glover scored 10 points. The Pipers shot 38 percent from the field, 32 percent (6-19) form three point range and 71 percent (10-14) from the free-throw line.

Up next for Union will be a top-25 match up on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Union when the Lady Bulldogs host Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) at 2:00 p.m.
