MEMPHIS, Tenn. - 2/18/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball posted a split in their season opening double-header at Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University on Thursday. Union took the opener 2-0, before falling in game two 5-4. Union is 1-1 while Christian Brothers is 1-3 on the season.
Union and Christian Brothers played to a scoreless tie going into the top of the seventh inning. Union scored on a two-run homer from Brooke Thomas. Thomas also pitched a complete game shutout on the mound with six strikeouts for her first college win.
In game two, Union fell behind 5-0 as Christian Brothers scored two in the first and three more in the third inning. Union began to rally with one run in the fourth, a two-run homer by Stephanie Saunders in the fifth and single run in the sixth inning. But 5-4 was as close as Union got. Union made four errors in the game and allowed three homeruns to the Lady Bucs. Hailee Edwards took the loss with two innings of work, allowing four runs, two earned.
Union will play two games each over the next two days at home. Union host the University of Missouri-St. Louis and William Woods (Mo.) University for games on Friday and Saturday.
