Union golf wins first tourney of the spring

JACKSON, Miss. - 2/22/2010 - The NAIA No. 22 Union (Tenn.) University men's golf team captured the Jackson State (Miss.) University Invitational title. Union posted the top scores on both days (312, 306) and finished with a team score of 618.

Union finished six shots ahead of Tennessee Tech University (624) who was second. Rounding out the field of 13 was Jackson State, Florida A&M, McNeese State, Mississippi College, Lipscomb (Tenn.), Lambuth (Tenn.), Tennessee-Martin, Savannah State, Talladega (Ala.), Southern Univ. and Alcorn State (Miss.).

Union freshman and former Jackson Christian standout Bret Barry was the team's top finisher in fourth place with a 149. Mills Hamaguchi (153) of Milan finished seventh, Ryan Chandler (154) finished No. 10, David Hopper (162) was No. 28 and Milan native Clay Mallard (162) rounded out Union's top five in the No. 41 spot.

Shepard Archie III of Florida A&M captured the individual title with a score of 145.

Up next for Union will be the Grover Page/UT Martin Classic on March 1 at the Jackson Country Club.
