JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/5/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team posted a pair of wins on Friday in the Union University Classic held at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 2-1 over William Woods (Mo.) University and then won 10-0 over Columbia (Mo.) University. Union improved to 10-2 on the season and have won seven straight games.
In the first game, Union got solo home runs from Lindsey Landreneau and Stephanie Sanders in the first and second innings respectively. Union held that 2-0 lead until a run from William Woods in the top of the sixth cut their deficit in half. Freshman pitcher Brooke Thomas (7-1) was solid for Union from the circle, tossing a complete game allowing just the one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Union only managed four hits in the game as a team.
The second game was a different story. Union exploded for five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam from Sanders. Union added three more in the third and two in the fourth to lead 10-0. Keaton Kirk hit her first homerun of her college career on a three-run shot in the third. Kirk (3-0) also earned the win in the run-rule game, tossing five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight batters. Landreneau, Sam Geisler and Sarah Freeman each led with two hits apiece. Saunders and Kirk led with four and three RBI respectively.
Union will continue in their classic on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. game versus William Woods and a 3:00 p.m. game versus Columbia.
