Hits record lifts Union softball over Reinhardt

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/12/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team set a Union record with 22 hits in their 14-5 win over Reinhardt (Ga.) College on Friday in the Union Invitational. Union dropped their first two games of the day to Davenport (Mich.) University 5-1 and 8-7. Union is now 11-6 on the season.

In the final game of the day against Reinhardt (16-4), Union jumped out early with seven runs in the first inning. Union added runs in six of the seven total innings thanks to their 22 hits. Stephanie Saunders managed the only long ball for Union with her fifth of the year. Lindsey Landreneau led the way with a 4-for-5 game, while Saunders led with four RBI. Brooke Thomas, Ali Thomas, Saunders, Sam Giesler and Brittany Burkett each tallied three hits in the game. Saunders was a double shy of the cycle. Keaton Kirk (4-1) earned the win with a complete game, eight-hit performance, allowing five runs and striking out four batters.

In the first game of the day, Union and Davenport (16-4) played to a 0-0 tie through four and one-half innings. Davenport, playing as the home team on the scoreboard, scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Union added a run in the sixth but no more. Brooke Thomas (7-3) took the loss, allowing the five unearned runs while walking 11 hitters and striking out one. Ali Thomas led Union with two hits.

The middle game, also against Davenport, say plenty of fireworks as both teams combined for five home runs and 22 hits. Union’s three long balls were just one shy of the team record of four home runs in a game. Union started with three runs in the first. The lead didn’t last long as Davenport answered with four in the bottom half of the frame. Union regained the lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. But again, Davenport answered to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. A run for Union tied the game in the fifth, before Davenport took the lead for good with a run in the sixth inning. Union got home runs from Saunders, Giesler and Landreneau. Landreneau also added a triple as a part of her 3-for-4 game, just a double shy of the cycle. Landreneau led Union with the three hits, pushing her average to a team-high .441. Geisler and Brooke Thomas added two hits, while Giesler led with two RBI. Hailie Edwards (0-2) took the loss with six earned run, eight total runs, three walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Kirk tossed two-thirds of an inning in relief.

Up next for Union will be a game against Reinhardt on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Union will then play either Reinhardt or Davenport again on Saturday afternoon.
