BABSON PARK, Fla. - 3/29/2010 - The No. 17 Union (Tenn.) University softball team earned a double-header sweep at Webber International (Fla.) University on Monday. Union won the first game 3-2 and then took game two 2-1. Union improved to 23-9 overall. Webber, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings, dropped to 20-15.
In the first game, Union used the long ball to generate all of the offense. Union jumped out front with a run in the top of the first on a home run by Ali Thomas. Union tacked on two more in the fourth when Brooke Thomas walked and Brittney Burkett followed with a two-run shot. Union led 3-0 until Webber made thing interesting with two runs in the sixth. Union held Webber there and took the game 3-2. Brooke Thomas (13-5) earned the complete game win, allowing seven hits and two runs with eight strike outs. Ali Thomas and Lindsey Landreneau led the way with two hits each.
The home run was the story again in game two with all three runs in the game coming off solo homers. Union again scored first with a pair of solo shots in the fourth inning. Ali Thomas hit her second of the day while Amber Hayes followed with a shot that proved to be the game winner. In the sixth inning, Webber’s Joy Fuller hit a solo home run to account for their only run of the game. Landreneau again led with a pair of hits in the contest. Keaton Kirk (10-2) tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and seven strike outs.
Union is off for eight days and will get back into action on Tuesday, April 6 when they host LSU-Alexandria.
