Union softball tops Lyon on first day of tourney

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 4/28/2010 - The Union (Tenn. ) University Lady Bulldog softball team posted a first round victory in the TranSouth Conference Tournament with an 8-2 decision over Lyon (Ark.) College. Second seeded Union (33-14) will play third seed Martin Methodist (Tenn.) on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Lyon (15-26) dropped to the losers bracket.

Union took the early lead with an RBI double from Katie Davis to score Sam Giesler in the bottom of the first inning. In the third, Union scored three more runs to with the help of two sacrifice flies and a RBI single from Ali Thomas. The Lady Bulldogs broke the game open in the fourth when Lindsey Landreneau hit a three-run home run. After Lyon cut the lead down to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth, Union tacked on one more run in the bottom of the frame. Keaton Kirk’s RBI single scored Stephanie Saunders.

Brooke Thomas (20-8) tossed the complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out seven batters. Landreneau and Kirk led Union with two hits each. Landreneau’s three RBI paced the Lady Bulldogs, while Saunders added two RBI in the game.
