Union women's cross country signs Martin

JACKSON, Tenn. - 7/7/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University women's cross country team signed Allison Martin of Montrose, Colo. for the 2010-11 season. Martin will enter Union this fall as a freshman and will major in Biology/Pre-Physical Therapy.

Union head coach Gary Johnson says, "We are very excited about our incoming class of freshmen. Allison and her new teammates bring great energy and experience to our team. Allison comes from a strong cross country and track background. Training at high altitude in Colorado will serve Allison well as she prepares to come to Union this fall and contribute at the front of our team right away."

Martin, a 5-foot-6 runner, prepped at Montrose (Colo.) High School for her two years, after attending Russellville (Ala.) High School for her freshman and sophomore seasons. Martin ran cross country and track during her time at Montrose. She helped lead her cross country team to a sixth place finish in the Colorado state tournament in 2010. Her track teams posted an eighth place finish in 2010 and an 18th place finish in 2009 in the 4x800M relays. As an individual, Martin posted a 12th place finish in the state tournament 1-mile race. She was the Southwestern League Champion in the 1-mile and league runner-up in the 800M. She finished 27th in the state cross country meet. While at Russellville, Martin ran track and played volleyball.

Martin was also successful in the classroom. She earned the Presidential Academic Excellence Award all four years, was the Christian Students United secretary for two years, and won the Montrose Spanish Award in 2010, the Career Intern Award in 2010 and the Drawing Award in 2009. "Allison is a wonderful Christian young lady", adds Johnson. "She has a great passion for people and the Lord. I look forward to sharing the next four years with Allison and all the new runners that are joining our team this season. They should blend in quite well with a great group of young people that are returning from last year."

Martin is the daughter of Rev. Chip and Melanie Martin of Montrose and are members of Celebration Church where her dad is the pastor.
