Union’s Martin, Bett named runners of the week in TranSouth

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/26/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University cross country team swept the final weekly honors of the season with Allison Martin and Alex Bett being named TranSouth Runners of the Week. The awards are for the week ending October 24, 2010, following the TranSouth Conference Championships.

Martin, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Montrose, Colo., won first place in the TranSouth Conference Cross Country Meet this past week at Union. Martin posted a time of 19:19 in the 5K event. She earned TranSouth Conference Runner of the Year honors and was also named Newcomer of the Year. This marks the fourth conference runner of the week honor for Martin this season. Her efforts helped Union claim their eighth straight TranSouth women's title.

Bett, a 5-foot-9 junior from Kenya, won the TranSouth Conference Cross Country title this past week. Bett posted a time of 26:04 in the 8K event, just one second ahead of his teammate. He was named the TranSouth Conference Runner of the Year as he helped the Union Bulldogs to their seventh straight TranSouth title. This marks the second conference runner of the week honor for Bett this season.

Up next for the cross country teams will be the NAIA Qualifying Event in Nashville on Friday, Nov. 5. The team winner advances to the NAIA National Meet. Also, the top five runners not on the winning team also advance to nationals as individual qualifiers.
