No. 1 Union gets past No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist 76-62

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/18/2010 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball posted a 76-62 win over No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist University in the first day of the Jackson Rotary Classic. Union improved to 4-0 on the season, while Oklahoma Baptist dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Oklahoma Baptist scored first on a basket from Allie Brandeburg. Union answered with a quick 13-2 run to jump out to a 13-4 lead at the 15:11 mark. Union got three pointers from Hope Adams and Kayla Bryant, followed by a three-point play from Adams and two baskets from Mildred Olumasi. Olumasi got the start for Union as Zeinab Chan sat out of the contest.

Union stretched their lead to 10 points at 16-6 following another three pointer from Bryant. Oklahoma Baptist cut the lead down to four points at 21-17 with 9:19 left in the half. However, Union quickly pushed the lead back to nine points, 28-19, just two minutes later. The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to the 13-point, 39-26, halftime lead.

Union made 7-of-15 three pointers in the first half.

In the second half, Oklahoma Baptist cut the lead down to nine points, 42-33, at the 17:10 mark, but Union scored seven straight to push the lead back into double figures. Union kept their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Union lead by as many as 22 points on two occasions in the second half with the latest coming 70-48 at the 3:46 mark. Union finished the game with the 76-62 final.

Despite the double-digit win for Union, the Lady Bison posted better shooting percentages from the field and from behind the arc, while also attempting five more free throws. Union dominated the glass however, out-rebounding Oklahoma Baptist 44-27, including 22-7 on the offensive glass. Union attempted 20 more shots in the game and won the second chance points battle 14-0.

Union was led by Kayla Hudson with 17 points, including four three pointers. Adams added 15 points, while Lavanda Ross recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mildred Olumasi scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in her first career start. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 37 percent (10-27) from behind the arc and 74 percent (14-19) from the free throw line.

Oklahoma Baptist was led by Samantha Smith with 17 points and Gabriell Mattox with 14 points. The Lady Bison shot 46 percent from the field, 46 percent from three-point range and 68 percent (16-24) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a rematch of last season’s NAIA title game. Union faces No. 2 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) at 7:00 p.m. at Union on the second day of the Rotary Classic.
