Jackson, Tenn. - 4/7/2003 - Leah Gronberg and Amanda Dixon of Union University have been named the TranSouth Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week. These players helped boost No. 9 Union to a 6-0 record on the week. The Lady Bulldogs are 27-7 overall and 11-1 in the TranSouth Conference. Union continues to hold the No. 1 ranking in this week’s NAIA Region XI rankings and was ranked No. 9 in last week’s NAIA Softball Poll.
Leah Gronberg, a junior from College Station, Texas has been selected as the TranSouth Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season. The 5’7” right-handed pitcher was 3-0 for the week. Gronberg started the week with a 7-inning, 5-hit complete game victory over Martin Methodist (7-1). The all-conference performer finished the week with back-to-back complete game shutouts of Cumberland (9-0) and No. 21 Lee (3-0). Gronberg pitched 19 innings this week and allowed only 11 hits, one run, and two walks. She also had 16 strikeouts and a .37 ERA. Gronberg is now 13-4 on the year with a 0.92 ERA.
Amanda Dixon, a sophomore from Pineville, Louisiana, has been selected as the TranSouth Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her first time. The 5'1” outfielder finished the week 8-for-17 (.471) from the plate with five runs, one home run, two triples, a double, and five RBI. Dixon 2-for-3 in a 3-0 victory over No. 21 Lee University. Dixon produced all the runs in the game with a homer, a triple, a run scored and all three RBI. In the second game versus Lee she had on of the two RBI. Dixon is hitting .330 on the season.
