JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/21/2011 - The No. 24 Union (Tenn.) University softball posted a double-header sweep over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College in their TranSouth Conference opener. Union won the first team 3-0 and edged the Toppers 2-1 in the second game. Union improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the TranSouth. Blue Mountain dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The win in the first game was the 100th career win for head coach Heather Hall. She now sits at 101-61 (.623) in her fourth season at Union.

In the first game, Union scored all three of their runs in the first inning. The Lady Bulldogs got two hits in the inning, but also took advantage of two Blue Mountain errors. Union’s Amber Hayes drove in the first run with an RBI single. The second run came on an RBI ground out from Katie Davis, while the third run came in on a throwing error. Sophomore pitcher Brooke Thomas (2-0) made that 3-run cushion stand up as the Huntingdon (Tenn.) native tossed a complete game shutout. Thomas struck out 12 Topper hitters, while allowing just one hit in the game.

The second game was played in a light rain for the majority of the game. Union again struck first with single runs in the first and second innings to lead 2-0. Hayes’ single drove in Miranda Mullen, who reached on a walk, in the first inning. In the second inning, Stephanie Saunders doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, an RBI ground out by Sam Giesler proved to be the winning RBI. Blue Mountain pulled to within one run in the fifth on an RBI double from Hayleigh Plummer. Keaton Kirk (2-0) tossed five innings for the win, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out six hitter. Thomas (1) tossed the final two innings for the save, allowing no runs and no hits with two strikeouts.

Up next for Union will be a road game on Friday, February 25 when they travel to Mississippi to play William Carey (Miss.).
