JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/2/2011 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team and top-seed in the TranSouth Conference Tournament will advance to the semifinals following an 87-27 win over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College. Union improved to 29-1 on the season, while Blue Mountain ends their season at 7-21.
Union used a dominate first half to put the game away early. Union scored the first five points of the game, but Blue Mountain pulled to within one point at 5-4. Union then rolled off 13 straight points and never looked back. Union led 46-9 at the half.
In the second half, Union’s lead grew to 61 points, 80-19, before winning 87-27. All 10 players for Union scored in the game, including 37 points from the bench.
Union was led by Kayla Bryant with 19 points, including 13 in the first half. Bryan sank six 3-pointers in the game. Mildred Olumasi added 15 points, Sarah Chan added 12 points and 14 rebounds, while LaTesa McLaughlin added 11 points. Hope Adams and Beatrice Duol each hit double figures in rebounds with 12 apiece. Union shot 42 percent from the field, 33 percent (11-33) from behind the arc and 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line.
Blue Mountain was led by Lisa Anna Powell with seven points and Samantha Burns with six points. The Toppers shot 16 percent from the field, 11 percent (2-19) from long range and 56 percent (5-9) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a semifinal game on Friday night at home at 7:00 p.m. versus the #5 seed Lyon (Ark.).
