JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/8/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team posted a double-header sweep over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University in TranSouth action on Tuesday at Fesmire Field. Union held on for the 2-1 win in game one and then exploded for a 14-0 win in the second game. Union improved to 9-1 on the season and 5-1 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent (Ky.) dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Union scored in the first inning and added what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning as they held off Mid-Continent in the top of the seventh for the win. Amber Hayes drove in Toby Joy for the first run of the game in the first inning. The score stayed at 1-0 until Union tacked on a needed insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double by Shelby Lamb. In the top of the seventh, Mid-Continent got a double and then an RBI single to lead off the inning. With the tying run in the scoring position with no outs, Union’s Brooke Thomas struck out the side to seal the win. Thomas (5-0), the reigning TranSouth Pitcher of the Week, tossed a complete game with 12 strikeouts and four hits. Hayes led Union with two hits in the game.
Game two had Union swinging the bats from the beginning. Union scored six runs in the first, three in the second and five in the third as they pushed out to a 14-0 lead. Union had five extra base hits in the game, including a three-run home run from Stephanie Saunders. Four Lady Bulldogs had two hits each to lead Union. Saunders led Union with four RBI and CJ Browder added a 3-RBI pinch hit triple. Ali Bozza drove in three runs with a double. Keaton Kirk (4-1) tossed four innings, allowing one hit and striking out five batters. Hailee Edwards tossed a perfect fifth inning in relief.
Up next for Union will be the Union University Invitational on Friday and Saturday featuring Union, Davenport (Mich.) and Central Baptist (Ark.).
