Union women’s basketball puts three on All-American first team

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/24/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball boasted three players on the 2011 NAIA Women’s Basketball All-American list. Kayla Hudson, Sarah Chan and Lavanda Ross each earned the first team honors. All three earned All-American recognitions last season.

For seniors Hudson and Chan, Union has been ranked No. 1 for their entire careers at Union, a stretch of 48 straight No. 1 rankings. They have captured four conference titles, two national titles, a national runner-up and a national semifinal appearance. The seniors have compiled a record of 143-6 (.960) in the past four years.

Hudson becomes just the second player in Union women’s basketball history to be named to the NAIA All-American first, second or third team in all four years. Charlotte Hart (1985-88) was the other. Several former Union players have been recognized in all four seasons when counting the honorable mentioned honors. Hudson averaged 16.3 points and 4.2 assists per game as a senior. She led the team with 121 made three pointers, shooting .438 percent from long range. She was an all-conference performer and was named NAIA Player of the Week one this year. Hudson leaves Union as the programs all-time career assists leader with 784. She also scored 1,776 career points at Union.

Chan was a first team selection last season for Union. She averaged 19.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game while shooting .559 from the field. Chan was named all-conference earlier this season and was also named NAIA Player of the Week once. Chan finished her career with 1,892 points and 1,112 rebounds.

Ross was a second team All-American last season. She averaged 14.4 and 6.6 rebounds per game this season as a junior. Ross made 22 three pointers on the season at a 42 percent clip. She was also named a first team all-conference player with Hudson and Chan. Ross currently has scored 1,350 points and grabbed 516 career rebounds.
