JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/1/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball posted victories of 7-3 and 16-0 in a double-header sweep over Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Friday. Union, who is receiving votes in the NAIA rankings, improved to 21-8 overall and 11-1 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 19-14 overall and 8-5 in league play.
In the second game, Union hit four long balls as a team which tied the school record for home runs in a game. Katie Davis hit two, while Katie Beth Fesmire and Brittany Burkett popped a home run each. Union exploded for eight runs in the first and four more in the second. Union added a run in the third and three in the fourth as they finished the run-ruled 16-0, five-inning game. Shelby Lamb and Burkett led with three hits each. Four other Union players had two hits as Union recorded 17 hits in the game. Davis’ four RBI led the way, while Lamb and Burkett added three RBI each. Brooke Thomas (9-3) earned the win as Hailee Edwards and Caroline George tossed one inning each of scoreless relief.
The first game was controlled by Union as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Lamb in the first inning. After Cumberland tallied a score in the second, Union answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Union added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to lead 7-1. Cumberland scored two runs with two outs in the seventh but fell 7-3. Union was led by CJ Browder, Amber Hayes and Lamb with two hits each. Browder led with three RBI in the game. Keaton Kirk (9-3) got the win with 6.2 innings of work, allowing three runs, two earned and striking out nine. Edwards recorded the final out to end the game.
Up next for Union will be a home double-header on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. versus conference leader and NAIA No. 7 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.).
