LEBANON, Tenn. - 4/2/2011 - The No. 7 Union (Tenn.) University baseball team split a Saturday double-header at No. 17 Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Union took the first game 4-0 and then lost the second game 10-5. Union fell 10-0 on Friday night as Cumberland took the three-game conference series. On Friday night, Cumberland hurler Aaron Wilkerson extended his scoreless innings streak to 48.1 innings.
Union scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take the shutout behind a complete game performance from Jeremey Stack. Stack (6-1) tossed seven innings, allowing just four hits and had seven strikeouts for the win. Union took advantage of four Cumberland errors to go with their nine hits. Doug Joyce, Cole McAdams, Kevin Kirksey and Danny Grimm each had four hits. Joyce and Kirksey each recorded one RBI, while Brett Pawlan’s double was the only extra base hit of the game. Cumberland’s Keith Kirby (2-2) took the loss in a complete game effort, allowing four runs, one earned on nine hits with one strikeout.
In the second game, Union and Cumberland swapped runs in the first inning and that scored remained until the bottom of the fourth. Cumberland exploded for six runs in the frame on seven hits. Union rallied with a run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and one in the seventh but never caught up. Cumberland added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to keep the lead. Kirksey hit the game’s only home run in the sixth. Cumberland hit three doubles in the game. Four different players recorded one hit each for Union, while McAdams led with two RBI. Jared Davis (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. Matt Fike and Cody Dew tossed the final 2.1 innings in relief. Mike Mandarino (3-2) got the win, allowing five runs, two earned on four hits with six strikeouts.
Friday night’s game belonged to Wilkerson and the Cumberland Bulldogs. Wilkerson (7-0) tossed a complete game seven inning, allowing just three Union hits in the 10-0 run-rule shortened game. He also struck out seven Union hitters. Cumberland scored three in the first, five in the second and four in the fourth to pull away. The home Bulldogs added a run in the seventh to end the game. Cumberland got home runs from Tommy Winegardner and Cory Farris. Union’s Kirksey (5-1) took his first loss of the year, going 3.0 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned on nine hits.
Up next for Union will be two games in Missouri with a game at William Woods (Mo.) and Central Methodist (Mo.).
