JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/6/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team posted a double-header sweep over Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 3-1 and took the second game 8-0. Union, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings, improved to 26-9 on the season and 16-2 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman dropped to 10-15 overall and 5-7 in league play.
Union scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Amber Hayes singled with two outs and then scored on the next play on a dropped fly ball by the outfield. Freed-Hardeman tied the game in the top of the third on a double by Sarah Cousar and a single from Amber VanSandt. Union took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. CJ Browder laced a line drive down the left field line that scooted past the diving leftfielder. Crowder came all the way around to score on the inside-the-park home run. Union added another run that inning when Hayes singled and scored on a double from Sheby Lamb. Keaton Kirk (11-4) earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing just one run on six hits with 10 strikeouts. Cousar (6-6) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits with one strikeout. Hayes led Union with three hits in the game.
In the second game, Union’s Brooke Thomas (12-3) missed tossing a no-hitter by mere inches. Freed-Hardeman’s Natalie Nelson laced a line drive to right-center that fell just out of reach of Hayes in right field. Thomas allowed just the one hit in six innings of work, striking out five hitters. The game was scoreless for the for the first three and a half innings. Union finally broke through with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Union scored the eighth run of the game in the sixth to end the run-rule shortened game. Lamb and Katie Davis each posted doubles in the game. Union’s Stephanie Saunders led with a 3-for-3 game with one RBI. Davis and Katie Beth Fesmire led the team with two RBI each. Union pounded out 12 hits in the game.
Up next for Union will be a trip to Lebanon, Ill. for a weekend tournament at McKendee University.
