JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/21/2011 - An important step in Union University’s NCAA DII application process has been attained. The Executive Committee of the Gulf South Conference (GSC) has unanimously endorsed Union University’s application for membership for NCAA’s Division II.
Union University president Dr. David S. Dockery says, “We are deeply grateful to Commissioner Nate Salant and to both the Executive Committee and the Expansion Committee of the Gulf South Conference for this vote of confidence. We truly are excited about the possibility of participating with and competing against the outstanding institutions that make of the GSC. The Gulf Coast Conference brings much to Union University and we trust that in the years ahead that Union will be able to add much to the GSC.”
Upon acceptance by NCAA II, the GSC will move forward with formalizing Union’s official membership as a Gulf South Conference Institution. Union will have until June 1 to complete a formal application to the NCAA office in Indianapolis. The university should receive word by the end of the summer.
Union was informed by the GSC of their unanimous endorsement by letter on April 27.
The Gulf South Conference offices are located in Birmingham, Ala. Academic excellence, 43 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference something special. As a charter member of D-II, the league enters its 41st year of setting the standards nationally, always breaking new ground.
