Union’s Copley named NAIA Scholar Athlete

JACKSON, Tenn. - 6/2/2011 - Derek Copley of Dyer, Tenn. and a senior on the Union (Tenn.) University baseball team has been named an NAIA Scholar Athlete. To be named a scholar athlete, a student athlete must be a junior or senior with at least a 3.5 GPA.

Copley, 6-foot-3 pitcher, was 1-1 on the season in four starts, but suffered a season ending injury during the first month of play. Over his career at Union, Copley has a 9-3 record with a 4.88 ERA with one save. He has tallied 75 strikeouts to just 31 walks in 83 total innings. Copley has been named a first team all-conference player, TranSouth Pitcher of the Week, TranSouth Scholar Athlete and NAIA Scholar Athlete during his career at Union.

Union captured their second conference tournament title in the past three seasons and advanced to the NAIA National Championships Opening Round for the third straight season. Union was 38-17 overall and 16-8 in the TranSouth.
