Union’s Sims reaches 1,000 kills milestone for career

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/7/2011 - Union University senior volleyball standout Anna Sims reached another milestone in her career. Sims topped the 1,000 career kills mark in Union’s home match Thursday night. It was exactly one week after Sims reached the 500 career blocks milestone.

Sims, a 5-foot-11 hitter from Trussville, Ala., currently has 1,002 kills and 516 blocks. During her career, she is averaging 2.12 kills per set and has a .278 attach percentage. She is also averaging 1.1 blocks per set. Sims has added 33 service aces in her career.

Union head coach Kelly Elliott says, “Anna is a perfect example of the type of student-athlete we desire to see in our program, excelling in the classroom and on the court. She has been an integral part of the success of Union volleyball over the past four years.”

Sims has been named to the TranSouth All-Conference team in each of her three seasons to this point in her career. She has also been named a TranSouth Scholar Athlete twice. Sims has helped Union to the TranSouth regular season title in 2010 with a 13-1 league record. She was also a member of the 2008 team that captured the TranSouth Tournament title and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. Sims has also earned a TranSouth Conference Player of the Week honor during her career at Union.

Sims prepped at Hewitt Trussville High School where she played four seasons of volleyball. She helped lead her team to three straight Area 13 Championships from 2005-2007. In 2006, her squad won the Fairhope Classic Title. As a senior, Sims earned Area 13 All-Tournament, AVBCA second team All-State, Birmingham news All-State, and was Team Captain. Sims was top-10 in kills for the Metro Area and was team leader in kills and blocks. She added Area 13 MVP to her honors as a junior. Sims recorded 3.75 kills per game, 12.5 kills per match, 1.5 blocks per game, and 4.5 blocks per match. Her 374 kills in the season led the metro area for 10 straight weeks. Off the court, Sims was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, French Club, and was an honor graduate.

Sims is the daughter of Eddie and Linda Sims of Trussville. She is a nursing major at Union and is expected to graduate in May of 2012.
