JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/3/2011 - The Union University volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) win over Martin Methodist College. Union improved to 12-19 on the season and 7-6 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist dropped to 12-23 overall and 6-8 in league play.
Anna Sims, a senior from Trussville, Ala., recorded three blocks in the match. In doing so, she became the record holder for blocks in a career with 543. She needed just one block entering the match to tie the record held by Jackson native Amanda Hutchison Coyle (541, 2005-08). Early this season, Sims passed the 1,000 kills mark and currently has 1,079 career kills to go with her 543 blocks.
In the first set, Union fell behind 2-0 but then scored seven of the next nine points to lead 7-4. Union maintained the lead for the rest of the way, including a 21-12 advantage, before taking the first set 25-16. In the second set, Union maintained their momentum as they jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Union stretched their lead to as many as 11 points in the 25-14 victory.
The third set was much tighter. Martin Methodist scored the first three points and led 6-3. The RedHawks continued to extend their lead and led 14-9, their largest advantage. However, Union scored six straight points to take the lead and closed out the match, 25-21.
Union was led by Savannah Hughes with 16 kills. Senior setter Emmie Moroski posted 31 assists, Lydia Wright led with three aces, Lauren Sprouse led with 10 digs, and Shelby Swink led with four blocks.
Martin Methodist was led by Ulirike Gebhardt with 12 kills and Ya Zhau with 10 kills. Paula Sioto posted 22 assists, Ann-Katherin Kuehorn led with two aces, Zhao led with 11 digs and Mariah Beverly led with three blocks.
Up next for Union will be the TranSouth Conference Tournament, November 7-9 in Pulaski, Tenn. on the campus of Martin Methodist.
