Union promotes Sinclair to head trainer position

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/14/2011 - Karen Tankersley Sinclair has been promoted from assistant athletic trainer to the position of head athletic trainer for the Union University athletic programs. Sinclair served as the assistant trainer at Union for the past two seasons.

Sinclair says, "I am honored and delighted by my promotion to serve as Head Athletic Trainer for Union University Athletics. With Union's move into NCAA DII, the future for the athletic program is very bright; and I am excited to be in a position in which I can serve the student-athletes by enabling them to perform to their highest athletic ability. My goal is to not only contribute to the success of the student-athletes in the competitive athletic setting, but more importantly to influence their lives for God's glory."

The position became available when Kristy Johnson, Union’s head trainer for the past five seasons, accepted the same position at her alma mater, Southern Oregon University.

“We wish Kristy Johnson great success in her new role at Southern Oregon”, said Senior Vice President for University Relations, Jerry Tidwell, “But we are thrilled to have Karen willing and well prepared to move into the head trainer position. Karen’s preparation at Southern Mississippi and work experience at places like Southern Methodist (Texas) and North Carolina should serve as wonderful preludes to continuing to build a top-level athletic training program here at Union University.”

Sinclair, a native of Covington, Tennessee, who began her work at Union in the fall of 2009, had already become a member of the National Athletic Trainer Association and Board of Certification in March of 2006. She is also certified as a Performance Enhancement Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Before coming to Union, Sinclair worked as staff assistant athletic trainer at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 2008-2009. Her primary responsibilities there were to work with women’s volleyball, women’s track and field and cross country.

Sinclair earned a Master of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science with specialization in athletic training from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She completed her thesis on kinematics of the scapula and shoulder complex in overhead athletics. While at North Carolina, her clinical responsibilities as a graduate assistant included working with men’s lacrosse, women’s volleyball and fencing teams. Sinclair also served as an instructor in undergraduate anatomy labs and physical education classes.

Sinclair received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2005, where she graduated cum laude. She was a four-year varsity letter winner as a member of the Southern Mississippi cross country and track and field teams.

Sinclair was married to her husband Scott on June 17, 2011.
