PULASKI, Tenn. - 1/7/2012 - The No. 2 Union University women’s basketball team held off Martin Methodist College on road for a 71-64 win. Union improved to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist dropped to 9-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Union entered the game with the NAIA’s No. 5 ranked defense, allowing just 52 points per game. Martin Methodist came in with the NAIA’s No. 2 ranked offense, scoring 94 points per game. Union’s defense held the RedHawks to 30 points below their average. Union has not allowed a team this season to score more than 69 points.
Martin Methodist scored first on a basket from Micah Anderson to lead 2-0. It was the only lead of the afternoon for the RedHawks. Union answered with three pointer from Rebecca Sharpe to take the lead for good. Union led by as many as nine points in the first half, before taking a 34-30 lead into the break.
In the second half, Martin Methodist cut the deficit to just one point with a 5-2 run to start the half. But again, Union was able to answer with a three pointer, this time from Astrid Hutteman. Union held their largest lead of the game of 13 points, 67-54, with 2:55 left. A pair of late three pointers from Martin Methodist helped cut into the final margin of victory.
Union was led by Lavanda Ross with a game-high 24 points, including 13 in the second half. Huttemann added 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Shelby Ashcraft reached double figures for the third straight game with 10 points. Amy Philamlee led the way with eight assists to go with her seven points. Rebecca Sharpe continued her hot shooting as she made two 3-pointers as a part of her eight points. She has now made 12 three pointers in the last seven games. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 27 percent (7-26) from long range, and 50 percent (4-8) from the free throw line.
Martin Methodist was led by Vee Young with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jessy Christopher added 15 points and 10 assists. Becca Smithson scored 11 points and Anderson added 10 points. Martin Methodist shot 37 percent from the field, 35 percent (7-20) from behind the arc, and 83 percent (5-6) from the free throw line.
