MARTIN, Tenn. - 2/22/2012 - The No. 14 Union University baseball team posted a 9-4 road win at the University of Tennessee-Martin Wednesday afternoon. Union won their fourth straight game, improving to 5-1. UT Martin dropped to 1-4 on the season.

Union scored first in the third inning. Kian Jost tripled with one out, then scored on a ground out by Doug Joyce. That scored remained until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Skyhawks scored three times. Union starter, Jacob Alexander, allowed his first runs of the game on two walks and two hits in the fifth. Alexander allowed three runs, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in his five innings of work. Cody Dew entered the game to pitch for Union to start the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the eighth inning, Union trailed by the same 3-1 score. But after 12 batters came to the plate, Union has exploded for eight runs to regain the lead, 9-3. Union recorded eight runs on seven hits, a walk, and a hit batter. Four of the seven hits were doubles four Union in the frame.

UT Martin added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Dew (2-0) earned the win by tossing the final four innings, allowing just the one run on one hit with four strikeouts. Dew faced just on over the minimum during his four innings. The only blemish was a leadoff triple to Jordan Owen followed by a sack fly in the eighth inning.

Union’s offense produced 12 hits, including five extra base hits (four doubles, one triple). Brett Pawlan, Jost, Will Irvin, all recorded two hits each. All nine offensive starters recorded at least one hit in the game. Pawlan, Joyce, Irvin and Danny Grimm led with two RBI each.

Up next for Union will be a four-game weekend home series versus Taylor (Ind.). The Friday double-header starts at 1 p.m. followed by a Saturday double-header starting at noon.
