JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/30/2012 - The Union University baseball team split a double-header Friday evening against Cumberland University at Union’s Fesmire Field. Union is now 18-13-1 overall and 6-6-1 in TranSouth Play. Cumberland is 20-17 overall and 7-7 in league play.
Union took game one in dramatic fashion, 1-0 in eight innings of play. It was a pitcher’s duel with both starting pitchers going the distance. Union starter, Will Irvin (4-2) earned the win for Union, tossing a complete game shutout with just two hits and five strikeouts. His counterpart, Chipper Smith (4-6), took the hard-luck loss, going 7.2 innings and allowing just the one run on four hits and seven strikeouts.
Clint Barnes got the lead off hit in the eighth inning. With two outs and Barnes running on the pitch, a double by Brett Pawlan was just enough to score Barnes and win the game.
In game two Cumberland got the win 7-3. Cumberland took the early lead with two runs in the top of the second and never trailed the rest of the way. Davis retired the first two batters in second inning, before Cumberland record three straight hits to take the lead. Union trailed 4-0 before the Bulldogs got their first tally. Union scored in the fourth and then twice more in the fifth to make the score 4-3. However, three runs from Cumberland in the top of the seventh was more than enough insurance. Union’s starter Jared Davis ran into trouble in the seventh. A solo homerun for Cumberland’s Cory Urquhart started the scoring. Then two more runs came across later in the inning on a double from Cody Ferrell.
Devin Stovall (4) earned the save for Cumberland, tossing the final three innings of one-hit, scoreless relief. The winning pitcher for Cumberland was Keith Kirby (3-3) while Jared Davis (0-4) received the loss for Union.
Union’s Cole McAdams and RJ Rayborn led with two hits each in the game.
These same two teams will play the rubber game of the series Saturday at noon at Fesmire Field.
