JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/21/2012 - The Union University baseball team posted a double-header sweep Friday at Fesmire Field over Indiana University-Southeast. Union won game one 8-1 and took game two 7-1 on a rain-shortened five inning game. Union improved to 28-16-1 on the season, while Indiana-Southeast dropped to 23-22.
Union trailed both games 1-0 before responding with eight unanswered runs in the first game and seven unanswered in the second game.
In the first game, Will Irvin (7-2) earned the win in a complete game effort, giving up one run and six hits and striking out four hitters. Jacob Holtz received the loss giving six earned runs on 10 hits.
After Indian-Southeast scored in the top of the first, Union responded in a big way in the bottom half of the frame. Doug Joyce hit a 3-run home run over the left field wall to give Union a 3-1 lead. Union added two more runs in the inning. Union scored three times in the fourth to cruise to the win.
Joyce finished the game going 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and four RBI.
The second game started with a quick first inning, followed by a 50-minute rain delay. After the rain delay, the game reached the top of the sixth inning before the rain set in for good, forcing the game to be called after five innings.
Jared Davis (2-5) earned the win for Union giving up only one run and striking out seven. For Indiana Southeast, Drew Evans received the loss giving up five earned runs in the game.
With Union leading 2-1, the Bulldogs batted around in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times. In the bottom of the fifth Union got four hits, including a two RBI single from RJ Rayborn and a RBI triple from Kody Pinson.
The same two teams will face each other again Saturday in a double-header at Union starting at noon.
