No. 12 Union softball opens national tournament with 6-0 win

GULF SHORES, Ala. - 5/17/2012 - The No. 12 Union University softball team posted a 6-0 win over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College Thursday in the first day of the NAIA Softball National Championships.

Union is playing in Pool E and is 1-0 after the first day. Union will face Indiana-Southeast Friday at 6:00 p.m. and will close out pool play Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. game versus Lubbock Christian (Texas). The pool winner will advance to the eight-team double-elimination tournament starting Monday.

Union (46-10) earned the win behind the pitching of junior Huntingdon native, Brooke Thomas (24-6). Thomas tossed 6.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts. Kelly Robey pitched to and struck out the final batter of the game.

Katie Davis of Union homered to lead off the second inning and put Union up 1-0. Shelby Lamb homered in the third as Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Union scored three more times in the fifth to seal the victory.
