Honors for Union Volleyball Filter over to NAIA Ranks

Jackson, Tenn. - 11/4/2003 - Gladys Wandera of Union University has been named the NAIA National Player of the Week for the second time this season. In what has been a most remarkable week for the Lady Bulldogs and Wandera, the honors and awards dont seem to be slowing down. In addition, juniors Wandera and Nicole Garber were named the NAIA Region XI and TranSouth Conference player and setter of the week respectively. As for the team, raters are taking notice as to the high level of play by the Lady Bulldogs lately and have voted them as the No. 22 team in the latests NAIA polls. This marks the highest ranking in the six year history of Union volleyball.

Wandera and Garber helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to the NCCAA National Championship and a perfect 7-0 record for the week. The play of Wandera and Garber led Union in wins over No. 21 Olivet Nazarene, Cedarville, and NCAA Division III power Palm Beach Atlantic. Union, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA, is 33-5 overall and 9-2 in the TranSouth. The No. 22 ranking for the Lady Bulldog volleyball team is the highest ranking ever in the six year history of the program. This also marks the first time in history that Union has been in the NAIA Top 25 rankings in back to back polls.

Wandera, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter from Kenya, posted dominating numbers during the week to earn her fourth TranSouth player of the week honor this season. Wandera racked up an average of 6.50 kills per game and a .586 attacking percentage during the seven matches. She also averaged 1.71 digs and 1.58 blocks per game. In the NCCAA Championship Game versus Olivet Nazarene, Wandera had 32 kills, three digs and six blocks in the victory. She racked up four different 20+ kill totals in the seven matches, and twice had double figures in digs. The NCCAA also recognized Wandera for her outstanding play by naming her the national tournaments Most Valuable Player.

Garber, of Columbus, Indiana and former TranSouth All-Freshman team member, earned her third TranSouth setter of the week honor on the season. Garber averaged 13.43 assists per game during the stretch. She also had three 3-game performances with at least 40 assists. Garber also averaged 1.74 digs per game and hit .333 (13-2-33).

The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 22 in the latest NAIA volleyball poll, close out the season with conference matches against Freed-Hardeman, Martin Methodist, and Trevecca Nazarene. Union will begin play in the TranSouth Conference Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee on November 14 on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University. Currently Union (9-2) has a game lead on Trevecca Nazarene (10-3), who received votes in the latest NAIA poll, going in the final two weeks of play.
