Jackson, Tenn. - 5/6/2004 - Five other Lady Bulldogs Honored by TranSouth
Christina Johnson, from Claremore, Oklahoma, was named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Year. Johnson, a senior first baseman for the Lady Bulldogs, helped lead Union to their sixth straight TranSouth Regular Season Championship.
In addition to Johnson, Union’s Leah Gronberg, Mary Kosco, and Allison Shein were named to the first team All-TranSouth. Amy Mejia and Holly Haycraft earned second team All-Conference honors. Gronberg, Shein, Kosco, and Haycraft each earned TranSouth Scholar Athlete awards.
Johnson led the TranSouth Conference this season with 46 RBI. She also placed second with five homeruns and 13 doubles. She ranks in the top 10 of each TranSouth offensive category. On the season, Johnson hit .346 with 54 hits, 13 doubles, a triple, five homeruns, and 46 RBI. She also added four stolen bases on the season. While at first, she started 50-of-50 games and posted a .989 fielding percentage, only three errors in 284 chances.
Union is now playing in the TranSouth Conference Tournament at Union’s Fesmire Field. The Lady Bulldogs remain as the only unbeaten team and will play in the championship game on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Union will need to win just one of two games on Friday to capture their third straight TranSouth Tournament Championship and their fifth tournament title in six seasons.
The NAIA Region XI Tournament will be played at Union’s Fesmire field next week starting May 12. Seedings for the region tournament will be released this weekend.
