JACKSON, Tenn. - 8/9/2004 - Union University has added a junior varsity soccer program to their existing varsity program. The junior varsity team will serve as a reserve team for the varsity team, now in their seventh season of competition. The junior varsity team will take to the field this season starting with their first game on August 26 at Union.
Current Union assistant coach, Jeff Lean, will assume the responsibility as the junior varsity head coach. Lean believes this junior varsity program will help enhance the varsity program by giving quality players the chance to develop there skills on the field at the college level. Lean adds, “The varsity team has set some high standards and this is a way to help prepare players for that level.”
This year’s junior varsity team will play a 10-12 games schedule with a team of 20 players. According to Union’s head coach, Dr. Darin White, “This is a great addition to our ever-growing soccer program.” White adds, “Soccer has been growing each year and we have been flooded with inquiries about Union soccer.” White hopes that this addition will continue to aid in the growth soccer with more and more players looking to play the sport at the college level.
Union’s Senior Vice President for Business and Financial Services, Gary Carter states, “Adding the junior varsity soccer program allows us to recruit student athletes who would not have otherwise come to Union.” Carter goes on to say, “We are hopeful that the junior varsity team will aid us in developing additional soccer facilities on our campus.”
