JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/13/2004 - The Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball team swept this weeks TranSouth Conference volleyball honors. Gladys Wandera was named Player of the Week, Nicole Garber was named Setter of the Week, and Allison Shein was named the Libero of the Week. These three senior players have helped Union to a 5-0 start to the season and a No. 21 ranking in the NAIA volleyball polls.
Wandera, a 6-foot-2 senior from Kakamega, Kenya, helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to an undefeated week with five wins, including a 1-0 record in the TranSouth with a victory over Freed-Hardeman University. In the victory over Freed-Hardeman Wandera recorded 31 kills, 6 digs, and 3.5 blocks. For the week Gladys averaged 6.13 kills per game (92 kills, 153 attempts, 16 errors, .497), 1.27 service aces per game, 1.60 digs per game, and 1.07 blocks per game.
Garber, a 5-foot-7 senior from Columbus, Indiana, was a huge reason the Lady Bulldogs had an undefeated week, going 5-0 with a victory over TranSouth rival Freed-Hardeman University. In the victory over Freed-Hardeman Garber recorded 43 assists in 3 games played (14.3 per game). For the week Nicole averaged 12.73 assists per game (140 assists in 11 games played) and recorded 9 kills, 2 service aces, and 17 digs.
Shein, a 5-foot-7 senior from Lighthouse Point, Florida, led the Lady Bulldogs to five victories this week, including a win over conference rival Freed-Hardeman University. In the victory over Freed-Hardeman, Shein recorded 13 digs and 38 passes with only 2 errors. She also recorded 18 digs and 20 passes with 0 errors against Fontbonne University. For the week, Shein averaged 3.81 digs per game and attempted 99 passes with only 3 errors (97%).
Union finished the week at 5-0 and also stands at 5-0 for the season.
