GEORGETOWN, Ky. - 12/6/2004 - The Union University Volleyball was well represented in the NAIA Region XI Honors as Gladys Wandera was named the Region XI Player of the Year and head coach Brian Dunn was named the Region XI Coach of the Year. Phylis Anyango was also named a first team NAIA All-Region performer. These honors follow Union’s first every region volleyball title and a trip to the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament.
Wandera, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter, hails from Kakamega, Kenya. This honor comes on the heels of her TranSouth Conference Player of the Year honor. Wandera tallied 654 kills, 153 blocks, and 71 services aces this season. In addition to her two player of the year awards, she has been named a first team all-conference and first team all-region performer. She was named the TranSouth Player of the Week five times, the NAIA Region XI Player of the Week four times, and the NAIA National Player of the Week once. The NAIA All-American honors have not been released.
Dunn earned this region XI honor following his TranSouth Coach of the Year award. Dunn has steady improved this program of the seven-year history. He has led Union volleyball to the region tournament every year. However, this season Union earned their first ever title and with that a trip to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in volleyball history. Dunn is now 243-62 (.796) in his seven seasons as the head coach of Union. Dunn is a 1989 graduate of San Diego State University, where he helped lead the baseball team to a Western Athletic Conference Championship and a Top 25 national ranking. His coaching career began at Riverside High School in Parsons, Tennessee where he led the Lady Panther softball team to their first appearance in the state tournament.
Anyango, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Niarobi, Kenya, adds first team All-Region to her honors this season, which also include first team All-Conference. Anyango tallied 472 kills and 89 blocks this season.
