Union Men Hold Off Martin Methodist for Ninth Straight Win, Women Win Big

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/24/2005 - The Union University Bulldogs held off an upset big by a hot Martin Methodist College team by winning 83-80 on their home court Thursday night. In the early game, the Union Lady Bulldogs defeated Martin Methodist 93-41.

With this win, the Union Bulldogs stretched their winning streak to nine games. Union is now 21-7 on the season and a league best 7-1 in TranSouth play. Union led 40-34 at halftime and led by as many as 13 points late in the game. However, Martin Methodist used hot shooting by Jarvis Young and Emmanuael Garrett down the stretch, plus several costly turnovers to pull to with in two points. Union's Bruno Martinessi made one of two free throws with just three seconds remaining to give Union a three point lead. Martin Methodist took the inbounds pass and put the ball in the hands of Garrett for a final three pointer that rimmed out as the buzzer sounded. In the game, Union was led by Pierry Valmera and Bruno Martinessi with 19 and 18 points respectively. Ben Frederick added 14 points, Corey Burkett tallied 13 points, and Courtney Jones added 12 points. Martin Methodist also had five players in double figures led by Yound with 21 points. Garrett added 17 points, Ricky Fisher and Justin Wilson scored 11 points, and Chris Williams added 10 points. Union shot 59% from the field and 35% (7-20) from behind the arc. Martin Methodist shot 49% from the field and a blazing 50% (8-16) from behind the arc.

In the women's game, Union led 47-17 at halftime and added 45 more second half points wi win their 28th game of the year. Union was led by Stephanie Clark with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Natanya Smith scored 16 points and Monica Elliot added 13 points. Peggy McCain grabbed 12 rebounds in the game. Martin Methodist was led by Jessica Exell with 19 points.

Union will play next at Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday, Feb. 26. The women will play at 2 pm while the men will play at 4 pm. Also, the suspended men's game between Union and Treveccca Nazarene will be resumed on Monday, Feb. 28 at Trevecca Nazarene at 7:00 pm.
