JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/26/2005 - The Union University Lady Bulldogs lost a close one as they fell at No. 6 Freed-Hardeman 68-66 on Saturday in their final regular season game of the season. With the loss, No. 7 Union falls to third place in the conference final standings with an 8-4 record. Freed-Hardeman finised first at 11-1, while Trevecca Nazarene finished second at 9-3. Union is 28-4 overall this season.
In the game, jumped out to a quick lead but could hold on as Freed-Hardeman rallied back for a 36-32 halftime lead. The two teams would go back and forth during the second half and with 30 seconds remaining, Union pulled to within one point and had the chance to tie the game but missed just their third free throw of the night in 10 attempts. Freed-Hardeman made 18-of-19 free throws including their first 18 in a row. Ashlee Robertson of Freed-Hardeman missed her final attempt with six seconds left, however, Union's final shot fell short.
Union was led by Stephane Clark with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Merideth Richardson and Monica Elliott aslo added 15 points for Union. Richardson made 5-of-9 three pointers. Freed-Hardeman was led by Ashlee Robertson with 25 points, Hannah Wood with 14 points, Kari Bishop with 12 points, and Julie Hayes with 10 points.
The TranSouth Conference Tournament will begin on Tuesday, March 1 with the first round. The schedule goes like this: No. 1 Freed-Hardeman has a bye, No. 7 Martin Methodist will play at No. 2 Trevecca Nazarene, No. 6 Blue Mountain will play at No. 3 Union, and No. 5 Lyon will play at No. 4 Cumberland. The semifinals will be on Friday, March 4 with the Lyon/Cumberland winner at Freed-Hardeman and the Union/Blue Mountain winner versus the Trevecca Nazarene/Martin Methodist winner at the higher seed. The championship game will be on Monday, March 6 with the two remaing teams playing at the home of the higher seed.
