Union Men’s Basketball Have Five Players Honored by TranSouth; Burkett Named Newcomer of the Year

JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/3/2005 - On the heels of their TranSouth Conference Co-Championship, the Union University Bulldog basketball team was flooded with honors from the TranSouth Coaches. Union placed five players on three different teams. Corey Burkett, Ben Frederick, and Pierry Valmera were each named first team All-Conference performers. Bruno Martinessi was named to the second team All-Conference and Courtney Jones was named to the All-Freshman team. Burkett was also named as the TranSouth Newcomer of the Year. Martinessi was named a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. Four of the five players honored for Union are underclassmen.

Burkett, a 6-foot-3 junior guard from Dothan, Alabama, led Union with 15.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He was first in the TranSouth conference with 96 three pointers made. He also ranked third with a .412 (96-233) three point percentage and was ranked fifth in the league in scoring.

Frederick, a 6-foot-10 sophomore center from Memphis, Tennessee, tallied 12.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He is ranked 10th in the conference with his 12.6 points per game. Frederick made 85% (71-83) of his free throws, an average of 2.4 made per game. The league minimum for being listed is 2.5 per game. His 85% above those listed in the official league stats.

Valmera, a 6-foot-8 sophomore center from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, came on strong in the second half of the season as he jumped his average up to 11.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He averaged 14.5 five points in just conference games, which proved to be valuable in Union’s 8-2 league mark. Valmera ranks third in the TranSouth with his 33 blocks on the season.

Martinessi, a 6-foot-7 senior from Asuncion, Paraguay, averaged 9.2 points per game for Union, however, he led the team with 124 assists (4.28/game). His 4.28 assists ranks him second in the league in that category. He comes in 19th in the TranSouth in scoring.

Jones, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard from Newbern, Tennessee, averaged 5.7 points per game for Union and tallied 35-of-90 (.389) from behind the arc. His 35 three pointers made was good for 12th in the league.
