JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/10/2005 - Danielle Pope, the first baseman for the Union University Lady Bulldog softball team, has set a new school record for homeruns in a season. Going into this week’s NAIA Region XI Tournament at Union’s Fesmire Field, Pope has 13 homeruns on the season, one more that the old record of 12 dingers.
Last Friday, in the final day of the TranSouth Conference Tournament, Pope hit her 12th homerun of the season in the 5-3 win over Trevecca Nazarene to tie the record. Then in the next game versus Martin Methodist, Pope smashed her 13th and record breaking homer in the 10-4 win over the RedHawks. The old record of 12 was set by Ame Clappsaddle during the 2001 season in which the Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a third place finish in the NAIA Softball World Series.
Pope, 6-foot-0 junior from Phoenix, Arizona, leads Union in most every offensive category, including her 13 homeruns. She is hitting .423 with 69 hits, 12 doubles, 13 homeruns, and 64 RBI. Pope is slugging a .736 percentage and is getting on base at a .487 clip, both also team highs. On the defensive side, Pope has had 385 chances at first base and has just one error on the season (.997 fielding percentage).
Prior to last week’s conference tournament, Pope was named the TranSouth Conference Newcomer of the Year in her first season with Union since transferring from Glendale Community College. She was also named a TranSouth First Team All-Conference performer.
