JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/6/2005 - The red hot Union University men’s soccer team is off to their best start in six years as the Bulldogs are now 4-0 on the season. Much of the success is due to the play of freshman Vagner Oliveira. For his efforts last week, Oliveira was named the TranSouth Conference and NAIA Region XI Player of the Week.
Oliveira is a 5-foot-9 freshman from Brazil who has stepped in immediately to contribute to the Union offense. In Union’s lone game last week, Oliveira scored both of Union’s goals, including the game winner in overtime at Clearwater Christian College (Fla.). On the season, he has three goals in just two games played to his credit.
The Union Bulldogs started the 1999 season with 11 straight wins. This start to the 2005 season is more impressive according to head coach Dr. Darin White because of the level of competition and the points accumulated through the Longo scoring system.
Up next for Union will be their home opener on Friday, September 9th at 6:00 pm when they play host to Belhaven College (Miss.). Union looks to stop their three-game losing streak to Belhaven. That same night at 8:00 pm, the Union Lady Bulldog soccer team will host conference foe Crichton College in their home opener.
