Union Volleyball Remains Only Unbeaten Team In TranSouth Play

JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/27/2005 - The Union University volleyball team remains atop the TranSouth Conference standings early in league play. The Lady Bulldogs now sit as the lone unbeaten team as they knocked off previously unbeaten Lyon College 3-1 (28-30, 30-24, 30-24, 30-25) on Tuesday night. Union is now 2-0 in TranSouth play and 9-4 overall, while Lyon falls to 10-12 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Lyon struck first as they jumped out to a lead early in game one. Union didn't take their first lead of the game until they led 17-16, but it was short lived as Lyon took the opening game 30-28. However, after that point, Union settled down to take the next three games from a very tough Lyon team.

Union was led by former Trinity Christian standout Amanda Hutchison with 22 kills. Edith Mendoza and Monica Schirmer added 15 kills each, while Lindsey Holmes and Elena Villagomez added 10 apiece. Purity Ogolla tallied 54 assists on the night. Holmes led with five service aces. Hutchison led Union with eight blocks.

Up next for Union will a road match at Mid-Continent College on Thursday, September 29. Then Union will step back into conference play with another road game at Cumberland on Saturday October 1.
