JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/10/2005 - The Union University men's soccer team advanced to the NAIA Region XI Title game with a 0-0 2OT (4-3 PK) win over conference rival Cumberland Univeristy (Tenn.). Cumberland had defeated Union twice on the season, including last week's TranSouth Title game.
This marks the second straight season that Union has ended Cumberland's season in the region tournament as they knocked them out last season in the quarterfinals. Union improves to 13-2-1 on the seaosn. This win sets up a title match with defending region champion and current NAIA No. 4 ranked Lindsey Wilson.
Union and Cumberland went scoreless through regulation and then two overtimes before Union put together four goals by Bobby McColl, Benny Crozier, Marko Pavlovic, and Duncan Nicol to win 4-3 on penalty kicks. Chris Lean stood between the post for the entire evening as he tallied 15 saves and recorded two saves in the PK round.
Union plays Lindsey Wilson at 6:00 pm on Friday, November 11 at Lindsey Wilson. Lindsey Wilson ended Union's season in 2004 in the semifinals of the region tournament. This championship match marks best NAIA postseason in Union soccer history.
