Owino Named TranSouth Co-Player of the Week

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/22/2005 - Josephine Owino of Union University and Jackie Weaver of Trevecca Nazarene University were named the TranSouth Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week for the week ending November 20, 2005.

Owino, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Mombassa, Kenya, helped lead NAIA No. 4 and defending NAIA National Champions Union University to a perfect 3-0 record on the week versus three (No. 3 Oklahoma Christian, No. 5 The Master’s, No. 9 Southern Nazarene) Preseason Top 9 NAIA Division I teams on consecutive nights. Against No. 3 Oklahoma Christian at Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn., Owino scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had two blocks and steals. Her best performance was saved for the 79-67 victory over NAIA No. 5 The Master’s College. Owino nearly had a triple-double with 31 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks. Owino added a steal and hit 14-of-19 field goal attempts. In the back-to-back-to-back games against NAIA Top-9 teams, Owino averaged 16 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.3 blocks, and a steal per game. She also hit 21-of-29 (72%) from the field and 6-of-9 (67%) from the foul line. Union is now 6-0 on the season.

Up next for Union's men and women will be the Union University Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25-26.
