JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/22/2005 - The Union University fall sports teams have reached the end of their respective seasons, however, several Union Athletes have been honored by the NAIA as Scholar Athletes. This honor is given to junior and senior athletes that perform at a high level of competition and also have accumulated a 3.5 GPA or higher in the classroom.
On January 31, 2006, the NAIA released their final fall sport Scholar Athlete list. The Union volleyball team was represented by junior Lindsay Holmes. Holmes, a native of Franklin, Tennessee, is a nursing major at Union. She ranked first on Union's team with 93 services aces and 569 digs. Holmes was second on the team with 110 assists and ranked third with 81 blocks.
Women’s soccer, in their first season of varsity competition, had two players make the grade. Seniors Kari Bachman and Kerra Kunce become the program’s first athletes honored at the national level. Bachman is a Nursing major from Louisville, Ky. Kunce is a Learning Foundations major from Gallatin, Tenn.
Women’s cross country also boasted two runners on the list. Jill Konkol, a junior Pre-Med major from Union City, Tennessee joins fellow junior Rachel Winford. Winford, a Political Science major from Helena, Alabama just recently finished second place in the TranSouth Cross Country Meet. Both Konkol and Winford were named All-Conference and All-Region athletes.
The Union men’s cross country team received honors for two of their runners. John Fox, a junior from Bells, Tennessee is majoring in Exercise Science and Physical Education. He was named the TranSouth Conference Runner of the Year after a first place finish. Fox also was named All-Region and earned a spot in the NAIA National Cross Country Meet as an individual qualifier. Joining Fox on the scholar athlete list is Douglas Martin. Martin is a junior History major from Erin, Tennessee. He was named All-Conference and All-Region this season and missed qualifying for the national tournament as an individual qualifier by just one spot.
