JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/25/2006 - The Union University men’s basketball team announced their first signee for the 2006-07 season. The Bulldogs ink Joe Shivers, of Humboldt, Tennessee, to next year’s roster. He will join Union in the fall as a freshman.
“I’m glad to be a Bulldog,” says Shivers. “It’s exciting to be able to play such a high level of basketball close to home in front of my family and friends.”
Shivers, a 6-foot-1, 170 lb. guard, played his high school basketball at Humboldt High School where he led his team to the state tournament in 2005. As a senior, Shivers earned All-District and All-Region honors, while also being named as the Team MVP. He averaged 20.1 points and four steals per game. Shivers was honored by the Jackson Sun as an All-West Tennessee performer.
Union’s head coach Ralph Turner says, “We think that the sky is the limit for Joe as a player and a person. He is a very versatile player who can make threes and also has explosive moves to the basket.” Turner adds, “It’s great for everyone involved to have local talent that can play basketball close to home.”
