JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/4/2006 - The Union University Bulldogs will get the chance to defend their TranSouth Conference Tournament Championship from last season as they defeated Freed-Hardeman 90-69 in the semifinals. Union, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA, improved to 27-5 on the season and will advance to play Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 7 in Nashville. With the loss, Freed-Hardeman ends their season with an 11-21 record.
Union led by as many as 17 points in the first half, before a small run by Freed-Hardeman capped off by a three pointer by Nathan Aaron pulled the Lions back to within 10 points at 44-34.
In the second half, Freed-Hardeman continued their run as they scored four quick points to get within six at 44-38. However, that would be as close as Freed-Hardeman would get. Union stretched the lead to 20 points at 58-38 with the help of a 14-0 run. Union continued to stretch the lead and led by as many as 30 points (82-52) with 4:24 left in the game.
Union was led by Mack Bealim with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Frederick scored 15 points, Pierry Valmera added 15 and 11 boards, and Kinley Sellers tallied 10 points. Deyane Lee grabbed 10 rebounds for Union. The Bulldogs shot 44 percent from the field and just 29 percent (7-24) from behind the arc.
Freed-Hrademan was led by Trey Tindel with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three point range. The Lions shot 35 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc (14-47).
Union plays in the championship game on Tuesday night in Nashville, Tennessee at Trevecca Nazarene. Game time is 7:00 pm.
