Jackson, Tenn. - 4/10/2002 - Union University’s Rachel Murray and Leah Gronberg were named as the TranSouth Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively. Both lead No. 3 Union to a 3-2 record for the week including a 2-0 conference record. For Gronberg, this is her third pitcher of the week honor this season.
Senior pitcher and outfield, Rachel Murray went 7-13 on the week with four runs, three RBI, one double, and one triple. Murray also stole two bases on the week. For the season, Murray is hitting .316 with 12 RBI, four triples, and two doubles. This Herrin, Illinois native is known more for her pitching as she was named last year’s NAIA Pitcher of the Year. This season, Murray has an 11-3 record with a microscopic ERA of 0.36. She has 133 strikeouts in 98.0 inning pitched. She has tossed three no-hitters and eight shutouts on the season. Earlier in the season, Murray won her 100th career game. She is now 109-20 with 1089 strikeouts in over 840 innings pitched. Murray ranks first in the conference in triples (4), first in ERA (0.36), first in strike outs (133), and second in complete game (14) and shutouts (8).
Leah Gronberg, sophomore pitcher/outfielder, had a record of 2-1 on the week with two shutouts. In the two shutouts over Freed-Hardeman and Tabor University, Gronberg gave up five hits, struck out 14 and walked just one in 12 innings pitched. Her only loss on the week was to No. 1 ranked Oklahoma City. Gronberg, from College Station, Texas, has a record of 12-2 on the season with an ERA of 1.39. She has 109 strikeouts in 96 innings pitched and has walked only 14. When not on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs, Gronberg patrols center field. She is third on the team with a .329 batting average and leads the Lady Bulldogs with 28 RBI. In the conference, Gronberg ranks first in complete games (14) and shutouts (10) while ranking second in strike outs (109) and wins (12).
