Union Adds Two Milan Golfers to 06-07 Roster

JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/15/2006 - Union University, fresh off their 2006 TranSouth Conference Championship, is looking to make a run at back-to-back titles with the addition of two Milan High School golf standouts. Mills Hamaguchi and Clay Mallard will leave the Milan Bulldogs and join the Union Bulldog this fall as freshmen.

Hamaguchi, at 5-foot-9 and 135 lbs., prepped at Milan High School were he played golf and tennis. As a four-year letter winner on the golf team, he helped lead Milan to the District Championship in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Hamaguchi's team also won championships in the 2003 and 2004 Region Tournament. As a junior, he was named to the All-West Tennessee Golf Team. During his senior season, Hamaguchi captured the District Title. He posted the lowest scoring average for Milan in both his junior year (36.5) and senior year (37). In addition to this golf honors, Hamaguchi was also an All-District tennis player. In the classroom, Hamaguchi was equally successful has he was a member of the Beta Club, the Math Club, and the French Club. He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Dawgs of Determination.

Mallard was a four-sport athlete while at Milan as he played golf, baseball, football, and basketball. In addition to Milan’s golf championship teams, Mallard was also a member of the Milan Bulldog Baseball State Championship Team. In golf, Mallard was named Most Improved and a junior and then Most Focused and honorable mentioned All-Region as a senior. His nine-hole scoring average over his junior and senior year was a 38. In football, Mallard was the MVP of the special teams as a junior and was named an honorable mentioned All-State preformer as a senior. He was named Most Improved, All-District, and All-Tournament in baseball. In the classroom, Mallard also excelled as he was a member of the Beta Club and finished in the Top-10 of his class.

Union golf coach Andy Rushing stats, “Both Clay and Mills will improve our talent level at Union. Even after winning the TranSouth Title this season, the returning players at Union can expect to be challenged by these two golfers.”

Hamaguchi and Mallard join up with former Milan and current Union golfers Cole Floyd and Drew Cannon. Floyd is participating in the 2006 NAIA National Golf Tournament as an individual qualifier. The tournament begins Tuesday, March 16 in Olathe, Kansas.
