Union Softball Wins NCCAA MidEast Region Championship

Wilmore, Ky. - 4/22/2002 - The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team won the 2002 NCCAA MidEast Region Championship on Saturday by defeated Mid-Continent 2-0 in the final game. This was Union’s fourth consecutive MidEast Region championship. Union will now advance to play in this week’s NCCAA National Tournament and try to defend last season’s national championship.

Union cruised through the tournament with a 3-0 record. The Lady Bulldogs pitching staff of Rachel Murray and Leah Gronberg did not allow a single run in the three games. Union opened by defeated Ohio Valley College 8-0, and then defeated Mid-Continent 2-0 in the finals of the winners’ bracket. Then Union took the title on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs were well represented on the NCCAA MidEast All-Region team. Making the all-region team was Rachel Murray, Leah Gronberg, Amy Mejia, Megan Quarry, Brandi Park, and Olivia Craden. Brian Dunn was named the NCCAA MidEast Region Coach of the Year.

With the second win on Friday, head coach Brian Dunn earned his 300th career victory as Union’s softball coach. He has compiled an overall softball record of 301-61 in five plus seasons.

Union will travel to Martin Methodist College on Tuesday for the final TranSouth game of the season. Union needs just one win to claim their fourth consecutive regular season title. Union, ranked No. 4 in the latest NAIA poll, has an overall record of 38-5 and a conference record of 12-2.
