JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/7/2006 - Top ranked Union University posted a big win over No. 5 ranked Houston Baptist University (Texas) at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Tuesday night, 81-64. With the win, Union improved to 2-0 on the season while Houston Baptist fell to 1-1 overall.
Union jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead in the game and held an 11 point advantage for most of the first 10 minutes of play. However, a Houston Baptist run pulled the Huskies to within four points at 32-28. But then Union posted a 17-3 run to close out the first half to take a 49-31 lead into the half. In the second half, Union cruised to the 81-64 win.
Five players scored double figures for the Union Lady Bulldogs led by Natanya Smith with 20 points and eight rebounds. Josephine Owino added 18 points, Merideth Richardson scored 13 points, Kaitlin Dudley added 13 points, and Jessica Graves scored 11 points. Union made 8-of-20 three pointers (.400).
Houston Baptist was led by Jacquelyn Overby with a game-high 25 points off the bench, including 7-of-11 three pointers. Jasmine Irving added 20 points and Jelela Simpson added 10 rebounds. The Huskies shot 40 percent from the field including 33 percent (8-24) from behind the arc.
Up next for Union will be their second game out of five in a row versus teams ranked in the top 18 of the NAIA. On Saturday, November 11, Union plays in Cleveland, Tennessee at No. 8 Lee University at 5 pm central time.
