JACKSON, Tenn. - 12/3/2006 - The Union University men's basketball team extended their winning streak over Mountain State University (W. Va.) to four games with a 91-81 win on Saturday. With the win, No. 5 Union improved to 6-2 while the fourth ranked Cougars fell to 8-2.
Union took a commanding 13-0 lead to start the game. The Bulldogs continued to dominate, jumping out to a lead of 25 points with seven minutes left in the first half. At the half, the Bulldogs led by 19 points, 46-27.
In the second half, Mountain State came out making shots that were not falling in the first half. The Cougars cut the Union lead to just nine points, 51-42 with 16:20 left in the game. However, the Bulldogs continued to play tough as they immediately expanded the lead back to 21 points in a span of just two minutes. Mountain State rallied again late but couldn't catch the Bulldogs on this night as Union defeated Mountain State by a final score of 91-81.
The Bulldogs were lead Ben Frederick with 22 points. Deywane Lee posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Brian Lake and Mack Bealim each added 14 points for Union.
Mountain State was lead by Paul Wright with a game-high 25 points. Jarvis Jackson added 18 points, Ralph Legg scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Yusuf Baker added 12 points.
In other notes, Union head coach Ralph Turner, in his 13th season at Union, is only four wins away from his 300th career victory.
Up next for Union will be yet another battle again a ranked team as Union will host No. 17 Oklahoma Baptist. Union defeated Oklahoma Baptist 71-67 earlier this year out in Oklahoma. Following that game, Union will close out their pre-Christmas schedule with a road game at No. 18 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Union also defeated Olivet Nazarene in the first game of the year, 83-65 at Union.
