JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/17/2007 - Union University's men's basketball team jump one spot in the latest NAIA poll to No. 12, while the Union Lady Bulldogs dropped two spots to No. 12.
Union's men have won three games in a row and four of their first five conference games of the season. Union is sitting in second place in the league, just one game back of the conference leader. Union is 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in league play. Union will face two tough games this week as they play host to No. 22 Crichton College (Tenn.) on Thursday night at 8:00 pm and then will host rival Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
In other notes on the week for Union's men, senior center Pierry Valmera was named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Week for the second time the season. Valmera surpassed 1,000-career points earlier in the season and now has over 1,100 points and 600 rebounds for his career. Also, with the win over Bethel College last Saturday, Union's head coach Ralph Turner earned his 300th career victory. His current records stands at 301-126 (.705).
The Union Lady Bulldogs dropped two spots despite posting a three game winning streak. The happened because of the shift in how the conference voted the top three teams. Last week Union was ranked second in the league, but after the top team Cumberland lost to Trevecca Nazarene, Union was dropped to No. 3 in the league behind Trevecca Nazarene and Cumberland. Union plays Blue Mountain College (Miss.) on Thursday night at home at 6:00 pm. However, the game of the week comes happens on Saturday, January 20 when Union will host No. 14 Freed-Hardeman University at 2:00 pm.
